ACE FREHLEY Only Saw PAUL STANLEY And GENE SIMMONS Once During 'Kiss Kruise'
January 3, 2019This past November, Ace Frehley reunited with KISS for the first time in 17 years for an acoustic set on the annual "Kiss Kruise". He joined the group to perform four songs: "2000 Man" (THE ROLLING STONES cover, which Ace sang on KISS's 1979 album "Dynasty"),"New York Groove" (HELLO cover, which appeared on Ace's 1978 debut solo album),"Nothing' To Lose" and "Rock And Roll All Nite".. Bruce Kulick also joined in on the set, as both former KISS members were performing as solo acts on the cruise.
During a question-and-answer session at last month's New Jersey Kiss Expo in Parsippany, New Jersey, Frehley was asked if he had fun at "Kiss Kruise" and whether he would be open to taking part in another "Kruise" in the future. "I had fun," he responded (see video below). "At the last minute, Doc [McGhee, KISS manager] came into my cabin and said, 'Do you wanna do that acoustic set with the guys?', which was the first show on the cruise. So it was really haphazard. We threw it together. They said, 'What songs do you wanna play?' Then they handed me this guitar that really had heavy-gauge strings on. I said, 'Could you put lighter-gauge strings on, so I can maybe play a little lead?' So they switched the strings, but it was still really hard to play lead on that acoustic. And then, after that, I didn't see the guys for the rest of the cruise."
After someone pointed out to Ace that the members of KISS usually stay in their cabins for the duration of "Kiss Kruise", Frehley said: "I have to hide too. It was tough for me to walk around the boat. But I had fun playing with my band."
Frehley performed with KISS from its inception in 1973 until his first departure in 1982 before rejoining KISS in 1996 for a very successful reunion tour. Ace's latest stint lasted until 2002.
Ace recently said that while he has not been approached to be a part of KISS's "End Of The Road" world tour, he was not ruling out being involved in some capacity. "There's always a chance I might get that emergency phone call," he said. "But pretty much I think it's built into my… I told my agent to build into my contract, in the event I do get an emergency phone call and KISS wants me to join the tour and take over for Tommy [Thayer], that I can get out of the dates that I have booked for the summer. So we'll see what happens. You know me — I'm the kind of guy that says 'never say never.' But at this juncture, I have no plans on performing on the upcoming KISS tour, and I haven't gotten any phone calls or had any correspondence. So that's where it stands at this juncture."
Frehley's new solo album, "Spaceman", was released in October via eOne.
